The best games under 10 hours are already in your backlog — here's how to find them

You don't need a new short game; you need a filter. How to surface the highly-rated, short games you already own on Steam, and why short games are the fastest way to shrink a backlog.

If you want a great game you can actually finish this week, don't open the store — filter your own library for short, highly-rated, unplayed games. Bundles and sales quietly fill Steam libraries with excellent short titles that never get launched because long games hog the spotlight.

Why short games beat long ones for backlog health

  • Finishing feels different from playing. Rolling credits on a 6-hour game gives you momentum that hour 40 of an RPG never will.
  • Short games fit real evenings. A 90-minute session completes a meaningful chunk of a short game — and almost nothing of a long one.
  • They de-risk experimentation. Trying a genre you're unsure about costs one evening, not a month.

The three-step filter

  1. Zero playtime — you've never launched it, so it's true backlog.
  2. Strong reviews — let critic scores do the pre-filtering.
  3. Session fit — prioritize games suited to short sessions.

Doing this by hand in Steam means cross-referencing store pages one by one. In GamersPilot it's one preset: Short Sessions weights session fit heavily, and Quick Wins combines short length with high ratings and zero playtime. Set your target session length and the ranking recomputes deterministically — same inputs, same order, with the reasons shown.

A habit that compounds

One finished short game per week is four completions a month. That pace changes how the whole library feels: the backlog stops being a monument and becomes a queue that visibly moves.

TL;DR

  • The short game you're looking for is probably already in your library, unplayed.
  • Filter: zero playtime + high reviews + short-session fit.
  • Finishing short games builds the momentum long games drain.
  • GamersPilot's Quick Wins / Short Sessions presets automate exactly this filter.
